Overseas visitors can marry in Australia. Often Australians return
to their country to be married on home territory. The following guidelines
will be of help to visitors or Australians returning. Reminder and remember
that the Mornington Peninsula, 65 kms. south of Melbourne, is a great
place to marry and honeymoon. I will help you with arrangements but first
contact me ( phone, fax, letter, email) to advise of your planned date,
time and likely venue for your ceremony.
Legal Documents You Will Require
A
COMPLETED NOTICE OF INTENDED MARRIAGE FORM
To be lodged with me one
month and a day in advance of your wedding
date.
This
document
needs
to be in my hands a month and a day before your wedding day. You can
send it eighteen months in advance if you wish. You
can obtain such a form by downloading, (see contact
on Links Page) or requesting the form from
any Australian Consulate or Embassy. Consular staff is able to witness
your signatures needed
on page four of the document. I recommend you take advantage of that
service. There is usually a fee for this payable at the Embassy.
BIRTH
CERTIFICATE
Bring these with you or mail certified
copies (Embassy staff can help here) with the Notice of Intended Marriage.
Documents
in foreign languages need to be supported with translations done by certified
and registered translators. Have these verified too.
PASSPORTS
Foreign passports should have English translations
clearly shown. Please note that Australians cannot use their passport
for identification
purposes. Their requirement is an original birth certificate.
IF APPLICABLE: Evidence of finalised dissolution of previous marriage,
or death certificate of previous partner.
REMINDER: Bring the above documentation
with you. Australian Law requires me to actually see these documents
and record all numbers and details.
Note … no proper forms, then no wedding.
